The Plantation of Ulster
The plantation of Ulster began in 1611 during the reign of King James VI of Scotland and I of England. It had taken nine years to beat the Gaelic Chiefs into submission to the English Crown. This submission culminated in the famous "Fight of the Earls" when the Chiefs of the O'Neill and O'Donnell clans fled to main land Europe.
In order to prevent the Chiefs from returning to reclaim their lands it was decided that the native Irish should be removed from their land and replaced by English and Scottish settlers.
