Carrigaline and District Budgerigar and Foreign Bird Club was founded in late 1992. Its purpose was to unite all the bird fanciers in the area - there were approximately 20 people with aviaries in a 7-mile area and only a few knew about the others, so the club was formed to bring together these people who shared an interest in bird-keeping. Our first task was to name the club and, after taking a census of all the members, we decided on a Budgie & Foreign Bird club since this best represented the varieties being kept. The club grew from there and in its first year we arranged two 'Bring and Buy' bird sales and a trip to the Cage and Aviary National in England. The second year saw a club show, more bird sales and an aviary visit. Year 3 saw the first of our current shows with our first open show, which we hosted for another national club (which has since gone). Carrying on from there, in our fourth year we had our first show on our own. We incorporated a 'Bring and Buy' bird sale with this show and we have kept this format ever since. In year 5 we had another successful show and another trip to the English National. In 1998 we decided to try and get more people interested in the hobby, so we put on displays anywhere we could, for example at country fairs and agricultural shows, in an effort to bring the hobby to the general public. and for all of this hard work our Club and its members were rewarded in Dec. 1999 with the honor of N.C.A. Club of the year 1999 over the Last few year we had a very heavy schedule as we have put on two to three displays each year Namely The Cork Summer Show/ Modern Homes Exhibitions / Local displays and The Mallow International Garden Festival. For the garden festival we design and build a garden based on birds./ Our School Visits, We also run two quiz nights a Year. Another major project we embarked on was our educational program for local schools where we brought some of our birds to the schools and talk to the children about caring for native birds in order to generate an interest in birds. As well as all of this we held our own Open Show on August 25th and another trip to the UK in Dec. Now while all this has being going on since 1992, our members have done quite well on the show bench, winning awards up and down the country, and even some in the UK at the National show. Each year we invite our judges over from the UK to judge our shows, and so far we have done very well with the caliber of judging. Members are kept up-to-date with all the happenings both at home and elsewhere through our quarterly newsletter. |
