Built on a cliff overhanging Lough Swilly, Fort Dunree has spectacular panoramic views in all directions, from Inch Island across to Portsalon, where another fort stands. Built in the eighteenth century by the British during the Napoleonic wars as protection against invasion from the French, it was handed over to Ireland in 1938.

Built by Druids nearly two thousand years before Christ, The Grianan of Aileach stands atop its hill. Spectacular views abound and it is said that on a clear day there are views of five counties. It was the earliest attempt by Druids at building a stone temple and is famous throughout Ireland as the best example of a building of its type.Although built by Pagans, St. Patrick baptised Prince Owen there in 443ad, and as a result a well there blessed and renamed, Tobar Padraig.
