Duncannon is the closest of the Wexford beaches to the Coachouse. It is a beautiful long strand of almost 1 mile. Located in the sheltered Waterford Harbour inlet, the water is relatively shallow and it is safe to swim within the marked area. The beach is patrolled by beach guards in the summer months (when indicated by flags). The beach is one of several that are excellent for shore angling in the vicinity. |

Hook Head in County Wexford and Dunmore East in County Waterford mark the entrance to Waterford Harbour. In earlier years, Duncannon was perfectly situated to guard this large bay from within. The fort has been there since before Napoleonic wars and is famous for the incarceration of the Croppy Boy remembered in popular Irish song. The fort is open to visitors in Summer and has some interesting exhibits, a craft and coffee shop. Local art exhibits are on show and there is also a childrens art workshop. |
The beach at Duncannon is said to have sand ideal for sand sculpture. Every year there are a number of competitions which attract international competitors. The beach is of European Blue Flag standard. |

The sheltered Duncannon strand is a popular over-wintering spot for many birds. Pictured right, rising when disturbed by a dog walking the beach. |
Close by Duncannon is Dunbrody Abbey in ruins, but worth a visit, with a coffee shop. |
