Kilkenny is know as the
"Marble City" due to the fine quality black marble found locally and
used in its older buildings and paving stones
There are some fine
churches, medieval buildings and excellent shopping. |

Kilkenny is famous for its
arts and crafts. The Kilkenny Design
Centre is the focus for this. Located
opposite Kilkenny
Castle , this features an excellent
shop, exhibition centre, and artisans with workshops in the main
courtyard. There is also an excellent coffee shop above the main
shop. Kilkenny Castle is also the home
of the
Butler Gallery arts exhibition centre.
There are a number of
festivals held in Kilkenny throughout the year of note is the
"Cat Laughs" , comedy weekend in June and the Kilkenny Arts
Festival held during early
August

The main street features a
number of interesting building including Rothe House (left) and the
market square (above and below). There is also the old courthouse,
and the Smithwicks Brewery. |

Kilkenny also features some
excellent restaurants and coffee shops. It is one of the most
relaxing cites in Ireland to visit and is a must during your holiday
at The Coachouse. |
