Report:
Ten-man Lausanne-Sports defied the odds to defeat Cork City FC in the Olympique de la Pontaise stadium in their UEFA Cup Qualifying Round first leg clash, but the Swiss side required a last-minute goal from substitute Cedric Horjak, to take the slenderest of advantages to Turner's Cross.

After just three minutes, the home side were threatening Noel Mooney's goal when their star striker, Javier Mazzoni, came close with a right-footed shot.

City won their first free-kick on 16 minutes, it was swung in by Ollie Cahill and following a complete mix-up in the home defence, the ball went harmlessly wide.

The first corner of the game went to Cork City on 19 minutes, Flanagan tried to play it high into the box but Rappo in goal for the Swiss was equal to it.

Olivier Baudry gave City another surprise on the half hour when his rasping shot from outside the area came back off the crossbar. When he went for the rebound, he was challenged by Mark Herrick. The Frenchman retaliated by elbowing the Cork midfielder and received the red card from the Bulgarian referee.

Javier 'El Tank' Mazzoni, the Lausanne danger man pulled a muscle and was substituted after 32 minutes by midfielder Wagner Gomes.

City were left-off again on 40 minutes when David Hellebuyck missed a clear header on goal. Noel Mooney was then booked from the resulting goal-kick for time wasting.

City fans were much the happier at half-time, their team managing to contain the Swiss despite a few scares. A draw looked very feasible at half-time, City given a double-boost by the injury of Javier Mazzoni and the sending off of Olivier Baudry.

City started the second-half with no changes, however Mountfield made the brave tactical change to 4-4-2, moving Patsy Freyne up front with Pat Morley. Lausanne, meanwhile are playing 4-4-1 with 10 men.

As in the first half, City were let off after three minutes of the second when Lausanne left-back Remo Meyer's thunderbolt shot went wide via Stephen Napier.

REUTERS/Denis Balibouse Cork City won another corner on 50 minutes, Kelvin Flanagan took it but Colin O'Brien was penalised for jumping from the shoulders of Wagner Gomes. Cedric Horjak replaced Remo Meyer at left-back for LS eight minutes into the second half.

Fourteen minutes into the second half, Cork City made their first change of the match, John Caulfield coming on for Patsy Freyne up front. Greg O'Halloran was Cork City's second to be booked, on 60 minutes, after bringing down Hellebuyck after the Frenchman ran past him.

With 13 minutes remaining, Santini was taken off by the LS manager, replaced by the Ukranian midfielder Yehven Lutchenko.

Pat Morley was substituted by John Cotter eight minutes from time, Derek Mountfield very much satisfied with the performance of the striker. Immediately after the substitution, Damien Delaney was booked for a foul.

With seven minutes remaining, Kuzba had a goal disallowed after he pushed Declan Daly, and within seconds City were given another scare, Lombardo driving his shot wide after good play between Kuzba and Lutchenko.

Noel Mooney, with two minutes remaining, beautifully touched over a long-range effort from Hellebuyck. Straight after the corner, Hellebuyck crossed in the ball and Horjak finished to give the home side a crucial late goal.

City will now have to pick themselves up before Sunday's league opener with St. Pat's, but they can take consolation from the fact that they now know that they are well capable of beating the Swiss and hopefully they can prove that in two week's time in the return leg at Turner's Cross. (CityNet)
