Report: Two late
goals from James Mulligan and John Cotter put Cork City
on a high at Terryland Park last night before they face
into tomorrow’s FAI Cup replay against Longford.
Mulligan broke the deadlock when he rammed home a close
range 79th minute shot after his initial effort was
blocked down by Galway goalkeeper David Forde.
And Cotter added to Galway’s misery when he side stepped
Forde after Pat Morley provided him with a neat pass
on the break in the last minute.
It was rough justice for a Galway side, who matched
City for most of the game but just did not have the
fire power to trouble the visitors. It could have been
a lot different had Eric Lavine not shot wide of an
open goal after City keeper Michael Devine was caught
stranded in the 66th minute.
But three minutes earlier Cork might have gone in front,
when Galway mid fielder Bobbie Ryan headed an Ollie
Cahill corner off his own crossbar.
Galway, bidding to make amends for their disastrous
FAI Cup defeat to Kilkenny, had to start without injured
captain Scott Morgan.
There was further bad news for the home side when striker
Stephen Grant had to be withdrawn due to a recurring
head injury after 16 minutes.
Cork striker Pat Morley troubled Galway in the early
stages, but as the first half progressed the home side
applied most of the pressure on the visitors.
Michael Devine had to make a good save to deny Billy
Clery after 18 minutes and Caulfield was forced to clear
a Tom Silke header off the line three minutes later.
Cahill was guilty of a bad miss on the half hour after
collecting a Steve Gaughan cross.
