Verbum Chap. VI #21. Table
of God’s Word Lk 24:32 ‘Did not our hearts burn within us as he ….opened to us the Scriptures’. Dei Verbum IV # 16
‘God, the inspirer and author of bothTestaments, in his wisdom
has so brought it about that the New should be hidden in the Old and that
the Old should be made manifest in the New’
[St Augustine]. Dei Verbum IV # 21 ‘For in the sacred books , the Father who is in heaven meets his children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith of her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of Spiritual life’.
‘The Church has always venerated the divine Scriptures just as she venerates the Body of the Lord’ Dei Verbum VI # 21.
Table
of Christ’s Body Lk 24:35 ‘they recognised him at the breaking of the bread’ Sacrosanctum Concilium n.10
‘The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Church’s
life’. Pope John Paul II:
‘The Church lives by the Eucharist, she draws from it the
spiritual energy to carry out her mission.
It is the Eucharist that gives her the strength to grow and to be
united. The Eucharist
is the heart of the Church’! [Homily 1 June 1997 Poland]
"The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. ..... It is pleasant to spend time with him, to lie close to his breast like the Beloved Disciple (cf. Jn 13:25) and to feel the infinite love present in his heart. If in our time Christians must be distinguished above all by the 'art of prayer', how can we not feel a renewed need to spend time in spiritual converse, in silent adoration, in heartfelt love before Christ present in the Most Holy Sacrament? How often, dear brothers and sisters, have I experienced this, and drawn from it strength, consolation and support! ..... Of all devotions, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest after the sacraments, the one dearest to God and the one most helpful to us." Ecclesia de Eucharistia Pope John Paul II's 14th Encyclical 17 April 2003 - The Year of the Rosary
The Vision of Knock
The Vision of Knock emphasises the dual importance of the Table of God's Word and the Table of Christ's Body.
Pope John Paul II (Link to Writings of Pope John Paul II) ‘Life
is suspended between two poles: the Word of God and the Eucharist…. The
starting point is the Word of God, a Word who calls, who invites, who
personally summons, as happened to the Apostles.
When a person is touched by the Word obedience is born, that is the
listening which changes life.
Every day [we] are nourished by the bread of the Word.
Deprived of it, [we] are as though dead and [we] have nothing left
to communicate to [our] brothers and sisters because the Word is Christ to
whom [we] are called to be conformed’
….. The
Eucharist is the culmination of this prayer experience, the other
pole indissolubly bound to the Word, as the place where the Word becomes
Flesh and Blood, a heavenly experience where this becomes an event.’ OrientaleLumen # 10
