Born 4th August 1936. Brought up in Portstewart, Co.Derry, Ireland. Has taught for about 15 years - in Ireland, Spain, Germany, & USA. In 1968-70 member of the International Writing Program, U. of Iowa. Since 1971 living principally west of the Shannon. In 1979 writer-in-residence in Fitchburg State, MA. Since 1982 member of the Aosdána.

Theatre: Since 1977 writing & directing own shows - over 250 performances of solo shows - in venues in Ireland: Dublin Theatre Festival, Belfast Arts Theatre, Andrews Lane Theatre, Ardhowen Theatre Enniskillen, Hawk’s Well Sligo, Belltable Limerick, as well as on the Edinburgh Fringe & in London; & in the US: Buffalo Ensemble Theatre, Ujima Theatre Buffalo, in Rochester & in the Steamboat Albany NY. Ran six-week summer theatre seasons in 1978 in Clifden, in 1983 in Westport, & in 1995 in Inishbofin. In 1985-6 directed a community theatre in Sligo.Worked also as an actor in other people’s plays in the US 1991-94, playing 7 roles in The Dining Room, Selsdon in Noises Off (Theatre Cornell), 4 roles in Voyage Round My Father (BET); & in the Kavinoky Theatre (Buffalo), played Parris in The Crucible & 23 walkons in the American première of Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell.
