Notes for VU HTML Course

Notebook Two

Monday 07th August 2000

A View of an Irish LakeThis is the picture, block.gif ,down loaded from the Virtual University web site and placed here using the align left attribute. It was, then I decided to change to a nicer view. I can carry on writing here and the text will wrap to the left of the picture. The only problem I have at the moment is thinking of what to write. I will just go on and on rambling about nothing in particular until I get to the base of the picture and then I'll stop. Do you like this colour scheme? I found a free program called HTML Paint Brush. It is very small, simple to use and gives you the colours of background, text, and links which you can then copy or paste into your HTML. I got the program from Tucows I've managed to put a link in. That's it I've wrapped way past the picture and I'm going to start a new paragraph. No, I've changed my mind I'm starting a new heading.

Review and Recap

  1. Yes I created and used a template file.
  2. Yes I saved my template as an HTML file.
  3. I began my virtual notebook and performed the exercises.

Helpful Online Resources

Almost all the resources listed below are recommended by VU. I would recommend everyone to look up the resources offered.

The HTML Reference Library
http://www.arachne.net/htmlib/ An excellent down loadable resource for HTML info. Version 4 requires IE4 or greater to use it. The first url is version 3. The HTML Reference Library v4.0 http://www.htmlib.com/

Microsoft's Typography On the Web
I found this site especially useful as I was having problems with certain fonts not showing the Euro currency symbol. Here I found updated fonts for download and a lot of information about typography in general. This font is Verdana, if you have it installed on your computer you'll see this the way I see it. Here is the link. http://www.microsoft.com/typography/default.asp

Color Picker from Chunting Software
It's a small utility to let you find out the RGB Hex Code of a colour from anywhere on your screen. It opens as a little window showing the colour your mouse is pointing over. It then displays the hex numbers for that colour for you to use in your html coding http://www.chunting.com Also available from Tucows and its freeware.

A description on how links are written
http://www.projectcool.com/developer/basics/02-sguide.html I found this resource very useful for help with links. Lots of other information too.

BUILDER.COM - Web Authoring - Spotlight on HTML!
http://www.builder.com/Authoring/Html/index.html?st.cn.fd.acol.bl This resource, I think, is fantastic it has links to all areas of web design.

Last but not least, NoteTab
http://www.notetab.com/ A free text editor that will take the place of Notepad. You'll wonder how you ever did without it.
