Moville 1-09 0-08 Malin

Malin were narrowly beaten by near neighbours Moville in their first round first leg clash of the Western Cellular sponsored Intermediate championship. The heavy showers during the game, left the pitch very slippy and made handling the ball impossible.

Danny Lafferty opened the scoring with a long range point but the home side soon equalised.

Martin Lafferty restored Malin's lead but Moville took control for the next 20 minutes and by that stage had moved into a 5-2 led. Malin closed the gap with an Andrew Davison point. Danny Lafferty left just 1 point between the sides when he pointed from a close range free. Danny Lafferty levelled the match with a fine point to leave the score line 0-5 to 0-5 at half time after a pulsating half of top quality football.

Malin were favourites at this stage, playing with the winds in their backs, and went in front when Danny Lafferty knocked over a free after he was pulled to the ground. Malin should have built on this lead, but Moville proved to he more determined side and won every ball that came their way and blocked any effort Mahn would throw at them. Moville were firmly in control and added 0-3 to give themselves a 2 point advantage. Moville killed off the game when Moville burst through the Malin defence and their substitute drove the ball to the back of the net. Moville pointed again before Martin Lafferty knocked over a few frees, in the closing minutes. Malin will have to improve considerable for the second leg in Malin Park on Sunday week.
