George Best

George Best was born in Belfast on 22nd May 1946, and he turned professional  on his 17th birthday in May 1963, I would say he was the best football player at  that time. He  was voted English and European footballer of the year in 1968, the  year that Manchester United  became the first English team to win the European  Cup.

He also scored 28 league goals in 41 matches in  the 1967/68 season. In Februay  1965, Georgie was kidnapped as part of Manchester  College of Commerce  student's stunt. Georgie Best once scored  six  goals in one match for United in a 5th round. His final league match for Manchester united was a disappointing  0-3  defeat against Queens Park Rangers on new years day.

In the 1967/68 season defending champs United could only finish second, but   their finest hour came at Wembley in May 1968, when  inspired  by  Georgie  Best's wonderful solo goal that beat Benfica, of Portugal  4-1, crowning United European Champions. Georgie ended the season with 32 goals the footballer of  the year award, and the prestigious European Player of the Year award .

Unfortunately George Best was unable to handle all the fame, and alcohol addiction put an early end to his career, however he will always be remembered as a gifted footballer.
