Italy - where it all started
Italy became the begining of the Renaissance, because it had been the home of the ancient Roman people. Many Italians were waiting to recreate the greatness that had made the Coliseum, the aqueducts and the works of art that we still see around us. Even the ancient Greeks had left there own mark on Italy, founding Naples in 600BC. The word Neapolis means "New City"
Italians had a further link with ancient Rome through their language. Italian is largely based on the Latin language of the Romans, so that many Italians were able to read the works of Julius Caesar and other writers without to much difficulty. In other countries Latin was known only to the priests and monks.
