The typical traditional cottage had a thatched
roof and whitewashed walls, the doors consisted of
two half doors to keep the farmyard animals out and
still have the top part open for air and light, window
space was restricted as the English taxed households by
the area of window installed and glass was also
expensive for large windows. The thatch was warm in
winter and cool in summer, but was in need of constant
maintenance to keep it waterproof.
