Nationalism and Unionism were shaping up for confrontation in the early 1900's, in 1916 the I.R.B. proclaimed Ireland a Republic and so began the Easter rising. The British dealt harshly with the leaders of the insurrection and had them shot for treason, but there was no going back, the great war was in progress in Europe and when the "Black and Tans " were brought to Ireland by emptying the British jails in order to deal with the Irish Volunteers it was the beginning of a Guerilla war which was to shame the Crown in its brutality. Michael Collins and Eamon deValera were prominent names during this period.Provisional government formed in Jan. 1922 under Michael Collins and Civil war was raging by June, it was a dark period in Irish History, as father fought against son and brother against brother. Michael Collins was murdered, the "Irish Free State" was inaugurated and the Northern counties partitioned. The Civil war ended in 1923 and by 1925 partition was confirmed, and so the stage was set for the next seventy years of problems. In 1949 Ireland was declared a Republic and was admitted to the United Nations in 1955, and to the E.E.C. in 1973. Currently Ireland is in a very strong economic condition and the Peace negotiations on the North have climaxed in a self Governing Co-Operative, hopefully the new millennium will bring peace and prosperity to this troubled land which has seen so much hardship during the previous thousand years.
"Behind Ireland fierce and militant, is Ireland Poetic, Passionate, Remembering, Idyllic, Fanciful and always Patriotic."

"The fools, they have left us our Fenian dead and while Ireland has these graves, Ireland unfree shall never be at peace."
(Exerpt from oration by Padric Pearse at the grave of O'Donovan Rossa.)
