St Georges, Mitchelstown

History St George's Church on the present site goes back to 1804, although in the parish of "Brigown" there has been a Church going back to 1291.

Piracy ! The most unusual cleric was probably Revd. Devereux Spratt. He was besieged and imprisoned in Co. Kerry, a year after his ordination in 1640. He escaped whilst under escort to Cork, but was captured off the coast by Algerian Corsairs who sold him into slavery. He was ransomed by the leghorn merchants and was returned to England in 1647. He was Rector of Mitchelstown (a safe distance from the sea) between 1661 - 63. He died in 1688.
