The
Youghal
Pipe
Band

The
Band was formed in 1914 by the late Danny (Duis)McCarthy,
The
early days of the band were troublesome as a lot of its members were
members of the I.R.A.
In
those early years from 1920 to 1940 unemployment was very high in Youghal, money
was very scarce, it was very hard to keep a band going but
Danny’s determination and hard work kept the band going.
The
late 40’s saw Danny’s sons and daughters playing in the band (4 sons & 2
daughters ),this was a great help to Danny and has
been the backbone of the band right up to the
present day. The 50’s 60’s 70’s 80’s 90’s saw Youghal
industrialised and the band profited from this, new instruments & uniforms
were purchased and a new Band Hall was built.
The band has many achievements over the years
1984
it was
featured on the B.B.C. the Jim’ll Fix It programme. When the B.B.C.
filmed a feature on Danny and the band in 1993 ,the band was invited to (Larmo
Plage) in Brittany France for a week.
In 1995 R.T.E’s HEARTLANDS also came to Youghal to film a feature on the band.
1985 ,1995 to 1997 saw the band take part in competition for the first
time winning 3 first 3 second 1 third placing.
A
long and proud history of the Youghal Pipe Band and its founder member
Danny McCarthy who died in 1983, his son Michael continues that tradition
to day with his sons grand sons granddaughters & grand nieces.
