ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES AT CORK UNIVERSITY (RESIDENTIAL)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES IN JULY 2000

Cork is the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland.  It stands on the river Lee, which flows through the city in two main channels, spanned at intervals by bridges.  The city was founded by St. Finbarr in the late 6th century on some dry land in the Great Marsh of Munster.  The name Cork means a  marsh.  All the main modern roads of Cork were waterways up which ships came to load and unload their cargoes.  The city grew by building on more of the marsh islands and then by roofing over the old waterways at the end of the 18th and early 19th centuries.  Cork became an important port for shipping provisions for European ships before starting their long trip through the Atlantic.  Other industries included glass making, silversmith work and iron foundry -something to notice in the city today is the lovely old ornamental iron work.  Brewing was and is an important activity.

A worthwhile building to visit is St. Finbarr’s Cathedral, Built in the French Gothic Style and standing where St. Finbarr built his first church.  About half a mile from the cathedral is University College.  The main block of the University buildings was constructed in the Cambridge-Oxford Gothic style.  In recent years a number of new addition have been added in contemporary style.
