EAN-128

EAN-128, also known as UCC/EAN-128 is a Bar Code system/structure which uses the same Manufacturer and Product Identifier system as to be found on packages throughout the World in retail outlets.

7 - digits for the manufacturer ID.

5 - digits for the product ID.

The alphanumeric Code 128 is used for the preparation of EAN-128 bar codes. However the bar code structure is specified in a manner that limits the use of none digital characters mainly to Lot or Batch numbers and Manufactures own Catalogue numbers.

EAN-128 is superior to all previous EAN code systems in that it now enables the manufacturer of Medical Devices to include as required: Lot/Batch numbers, date and quantity. The HIBC Secondary structure can optionally be included as part of an EAN-128 bar code.

New South Wales wants EAN Bar Codes on Device Labels. Link to NSW Government page.
