Bree

the Big and the Little People

Bree is unique in Middle-earth in that it accommodates both Hobbits and Humans, and this peaceful co-existence has continued for centuries. They call one another the Big Folk and the Little Folk in a friendly manner and have long considered that both are essential parts of the community. Breefolk are proud to relate that nowhere else in the world is this peculiar (but excellent) arrangement to be found.

The Men of Bree assert that their lineage goes back to the earliest men that crossed the mountains, deep in the First Age. They are a swarthy folk, short and stocky in the main and largely unmingled with other peoples.

The Hobbits of Bree lay claim to the honour of being the oldest known Hobbit community. They tend to inhabit the higher slopes of the hill above the houses of the Men and the north side of the hill in Staddle.

"The Bree-folk, Big and Little, did not themselves travel much; and the affairs of the four villages were their chief concern."
