Rivendell in the Fourth Age

Rivendell has remained a refuge and haven of the free peoples in the years since Elrond’s departure. Though many of the high-elven kindred departed over-sea to the West many chose to remain in Middle-earth, at least for a time, and many Silvan Elves have joined them from across the mountains.

With the restoration of the Northern Kingdom greater numbers of men have been abroad, and many are gladly received in Rivendell. The Lords of the Dúnedain, the heirs of Aragorn that are the Kings of Gondor and Arnor, and other great folk often call at Rivendell on the occasion of their travels through the North Kingdom.

Gildor was silent for a moment. ‘I do not like this news,’ he said at last. ‘That Gandalf should be late, does not bode well. But it is said: Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger. The choice is yours: to go or wait.’

‘And it is also said,’ answered Frodo: ‘Go not to the Elves for counsel, for they will say both no and yes.’

‘It is indeed?’ laughed Gildor. ‘Elves seldom give unguarded advice, for advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill.
