The Party Field

Here is the party field, where each year the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins is celebrated by the descendants of Sam Gamgee, the residents of Bag End. Although these days few know the true story of Bilbo or his renowned heir, their birthday is still a fine excuse for a party. Each year all of Hobbiton and many of the surrounding villages are invited, and a great feast is held.

I have studied the Red Book, myself, and I believe every word of the tale, though there are some that begin to doubt whether any of it happened at all.

Behold the living proof, the great Mallorn, planted by the master gardener Sam Gamgee himself in the year 1420. See how high it grows and beautiful its golden leaves are. Folk come from miles around to see this tree, and it is said that there are none others like it this side of the mountains.

I myself have never seen the mountains, but I hope to depart one day on my own adventure. Most Hobbits are cautious fellows, but not I. The blood of my forefathers boils within me, driving me to seek out danger.

"In the Party Field, a beautiful young sapling leaped up: it had silver bark and long leaves and burst into golden flowers in April. It was indeed a mallorn, and it was the wonder of the neighborhood. In after years, as it grew in grace and beauty, it was known far and wide and people would come long journeys to see it: the only mallorn west of the Mountains and east of the Sea, and one of the finest in the world."
