The Castlerea Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Scheme, co-financed by the EU under ERDF funding and the National Development Plan had been approved for funding of €12 million with the civil contract costing over €8.4 million.
The scheme involved the construction of a new treatment plant to cater for present and future needs in the area. The scheme also involved an extension of the present network and the provision of surface water sewers.
Scope and Extent of works
When the Castlerea Main Drainage and Waste Water Treatment Works is fully developed it will provide an up to date and modern system for the disposal of effluent from Castlerea town and its environs.
The contract consists of the construction of the following:
Foul Sewers
Extensions to the existing foul sewer network are proposed at the following locations:
a) Ballinlough Road
b) Williamstown Road
c) From existing pumping station at Patrick Street through fields to the pumping station at the proposed treatment works
d) Castleplunkett Road to discharge to the existing pumping station
Surface Water Pipeline
a) Ballinlough Road
b) Frenchpark Road
c) Main Street
d) Barrack Street
e) Patrick Street
f) From Main Street to the Francis River along the Industrial Estate Road
g) Castleplunkeet Road
Pumping Stations
a) New pumping station at the existing site at the townland of Arm, together with a rising main from the pumping station MHF11 on the proposed sewer on the Williamstown Road
b) New pumping station on the Williamstown Road together with a rising main from the pumping station to the preliminary units of the proposed treatment works
c) New swimming pool pumping station adjacent to the existing swimming pool together with a rising main from the pumping station to MH166 on the existing sewer system
d) New pumping station at Termon, together with a new rising main to manhole - F88
e) New pumping station at Knockroe to connect into town system by means of a new rising main at Knockroe
f) Decommissioning and demolition of the existing pumping stations at Patrick Street, Arm, Knockroe, Termon and in the grounds of the swimming pool
Treatment Works
This contract also consists of the decommissioning of the existing Sewerage Treatment Works and the construction of a new treatment works at an adjacent green field site as shown on the drawings in the townland of Harristown. The new works shall include:
a) Preliminary Units and Sludge Acceptance Plant
b) Stormwater Tank and Return Pumping Station
c) Aeration Tanks
d) Final Clarifiers
e) Sludge Thickening & Blending Tanks
f) Sludge Dewatering Plant House
g) Treatment Works Administration Building
h) Outfall Pipeline to receiving watercourse

• 5260 linear metres of 225mm diameter pipeline
• 851 linear metres of 225mm diameter pipeline
825 metres of 450mm diameter pipeline
Surface Water Pipelines
• 666 metres of 225mm diameter pipeline
• 1442 metres of 300mm diameter pipeline
• 710 meters of 375mm diameter pipeline
• 61 metres of 400mm diameter pipeline
• 1018 metres of 450mm diameter pipeline
Rising Mains
• 664 metres of 100mm diameter HPPE pipe
• 52 linear metres of 150mm diameter HPPE pipe
Water Distribution Pipelines
• 1200 metres of 150mm HPPE pipe
The work included in the Water Supply Distribution System pipelaying also entailed the provision of sluice valves, scour valves, air valves, fire hydrants (double and single), water meters and all specials required in the connection of these fittings to the pipelines, as well as the provision and erection of all necessary indicator plates on permanent walls or on sastlereapecially constructed plates.
